Any day the Library Reads list shows up is a good day. Number one on July’s list is What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher. “A retelling of the Fall of the House of Usher, Kingfisher’s latest adds the creepiest of flesh to the bare-bones tale by Poe. Complete with a scary, isolated mansion and eerie behaviors of the residents, this version not only makes perfect sense within the original narrative, but adds a depth of understanding that suddenly makes all the pieces fall into place. This is for fans of Mexican Gothic, The Haunting of Hill House, and The Night Stranger.” (7-12) Sheri Stanley

Bet on It is by Jodie Slaughter. “Aja meets a handsome stranger while having a panic attack. Walker’s not looking for a relationship, especially in his hometown, the source of his PTSD and anxiety. But Aja is beautiful, understands him, and kisses like a dream. The bingo hall setting, the senior characters, the body-positive story—there’s so much to love in this fun, interracial romance. Fans of Talia Hibbert and Gail Honeyman will like this one.” (7-12) Elizabeth Gabriel

Julie Garwood’s latest is Grace Under Fire. “Romantic suspense at its best. A beautiful, talented songwriter is at her sister-in-law’s awaiting a trip to Scotland. During a brief walk around the block, her whole world changes. Of course, a handsome man helps her save the day.  This book has loads of fast-paced fun and is for fans of Catherine Coulter and Karen Robards.” (7-14) Susan Willis

If you grew up reading graphic novels, Wash Day Diaries by Jamila Rowser will be right down your alley. “At its core, this graphic novel is a story about four beautiful, strong black women and their friendship. Within the framework of hair wash day, we see each character dealing with her own issues, from work and relationships to mental health struggles. This one’s for readers of Another Brooklyn and Queenie.” (7-5) Aryn O’Connor

What we’re reading and recommend:

Jeanette—”I’d put Hide by Kiersten White right up there with Stephen King.”

Natalie—“The Magnolia Palace by Fiona Davis is great! It’s the story of the Frick Museum in Manhattan and jumps between then and now.”

Lavonne—“I’m listening to Run, Rose, Run by James Patterson and Dolly Parton. Dolly reads it and I’m really enjoying listening to her.”

Kim—“I recently read Davis Sedaris’s Happy-Go-Lucky. His books are both funny and real.”

Abril—“I’m reading the the Nevermore trilogy. This Edgar Allen Poe ‘ish’ series begins in a bookstore where fictional characters come to life. Sounds like fun until the murders begin.”

Helen—“Just finished and loved Out of the Clear Blue Sky by Kristan Higgins. This well written, quick read begins with a husband leaving his wife for a younger woman. Lilly, the first wife, and Melissa, the second wife, tell the story. First, it’s funny. Lilly seeks and enjoys a little revenge on the ex-husband. Second, it’s touching. Lilly is a midwife and all-around terrific woman. Finally, the main characters develop and, most of them, turn into people I’d like to have as friends.”

Hope to see you this week in the library. Happy reading!
