WATER TREATMENT

This department is responsible for operation and maintenance of the city’s two surface water treatment plants. These facilities have a combined capacity of 17 million gallons/day (MGD) and a combined average daily production of about 7.4 MGD. During summer months daily demand has been known to reach levels between 10 MGD and 11 MGD. One of the water treatment plants has been in continuous operation for approximately thirty-eight years and is capable of producing 12 MGD. A second treatment plant which began operation in 2013 is capable of producing 5 MGD.

The City of Mount Pleasant holds a total of 16,598 acre-feet/year in water rights in Lake Bob Sandlin, Lake Tankersly, and Lake Cypress Springs. In addition to the treatment plants, we also maintain the raw water pumping facilities including inlet structures, pumping equipment, three elevated storage tanks with a capacity of 1.8 MG, and five ground storage tanks with a capacity of 5.3 MG.

The water plants utilize standard treatment processes that are divided into five stages known as coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. The primary function of the water treatment department is to provide an adequate supply of safe drinking water to the customers of the City of Mount Pleasant. Our water meets or exceeds all federal and state regulations for safe drinking water.
