Four writers became Hall of Fame authors this month, including Darby Kane with The Engagement Party. According to one review, “International bestseller Darby Kane’s latest gripping and twisty thriller set on a private island in Maine where secrets piled upon secrets and lies upon lies are all revealed in one fateful weekend.” Emily Hunt went missing from her affluent school on graduation weekend. Her body was found floating in a river and another student died by suicide. The police tied the two deaths together and closed the case—but they got it wrong and now someone is determined to set it right. Twelve years later, the college friends have a long-overdue reunion in Maine. Almost immediately they find a dead man in the trunk of a car. They soon realize that they need to stop a killer before they become prey. (12-5)

Evie Dunmore’s historical romance, The Gentleman’s Gambit, also made the Hall of Fame. Catriona Campbell’s life revolves around her work at Oxford and her fight for women’s suffrage. She has put aside any thought of romance until she is forced to play host to Elias Khoury. He is supposedly there to classify ancient artefacts, but in reality, he’s there to take them back to the Middle East where they belong. Two very different people become a perfect match in a risky new game that forces Catriona to put her heart at stake. (12-5)

Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon is an historical mystery based on the diary of Martha Ballard, a renowned 18th-century midwife who defied the legal system and wrote herself into American history. In 1789 a man’s body was found under the ice of the Kennebec River. Ballard was called to examine the body to determine the cause of death. A local doctor undermines her conclusion by ruling that the death was an accident. Martha pursues the truth and her diary soon lands at the center of the scandal. This layered mystery introduces an unsung heroine who refused to accept “her place” and was determined to find the truth. (12-5)

The final author claiming a spot is Denise Williams with Technically Yours. Pearl Harris knows to be careful in work and in love. She has a real chance to make lasting change at OurCode, a nonprofit aimed at inspiring high schoolers to code. A scandal puts its reputation at risk and Pearl doesn’t expect the one man she never stopped thinking about to join as the newest member of her board of directors. Cord Matthews fell for Pearl eight years ago and his feelings haven’t changed. Both are hesitant to trust their feelings and take a risk that might derail Pearl’s career and the progress she’s made at OurCode. (12-5)

This month’s Book Club selection is Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q Sutanto. If you enjoyed Dial A for Aunties, you’ll love this one. Vera is a widow who lives above her failing tea shop. Days are filled with routine until Vera finds a dead man in the floor of the tea shop. After calling the police, Vera sees that the man is clutching a flash drive in his hand. Thinking that she can solve the murder, Vera snatches the flash drive and hides it in her pocket. Vera believes that the murderer will come back for the drive. All she has to do is decide who, in her suddenly growing business, is the killer. What surprises lonely Vera is that she comes to care about and form friendships with these new customers. This story will tickle your funny bone and touch your heart.

Happy reading and we’ll see you in the library!
