LIBRARY CORNER | 7/30/21
Each year about this time I think, “Thank you, Mr. Carrier!” I am so grateful to have a cool place to work.
Preschool Story Time is taking a break and will resume Tuesday, August 24, at 11 a.m. The Explorium is still open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9-11. Bring the kids and let them enjoy the outside activities.
Our Friends of the Library group is making big plans for the coming year. We begin in September, but his group is already putting things on the calendar. They are planning a booth at the Cinco de Mayo Celebration (August 28). Look for their table. Then they are hosting a terrific Library Open House, November13, to officially kick off our Christmas in the library. Stay tuned for more.
We’re also getting ready for school opening and plan to begin staying open until 8 p.m. Thursdays. Look for that to happen August 12. Book Clubs will meet Thursdays, Jeanette will host a craft each month, and the Friends’ Group is planning some fun Thursday evening classes.
There are a few more August Library Reads suggestions, including Yours Cheerfully by AJ Pearce. “Fans of Dear Mrs. Bird will cheer Emmy Lake’s return as a young advice columnist in wartime London. A chance meeting leads to Emmy visiting a munitions factory where she learns about the struggles of the women working there. This is a wonderful, well-told story for fans of Lissa Evans and Jojo Moyes.” (8-10) Brenda O’Brien
The Royals Next Door is by Karina Halle. “After a prince and princess move to her British Columbia town, a local teacher falls for their grumpy bodyguard. This charming romantic comedy is unexpectedly moving and features deep and layered characters. It’s perfect for fans of The Royal We and Royal Holiday.” (8-31) Janet Schneider
Paula Hawkins’ latest is A Slow Fire Burning. “A brutal crime is committed on a London houseboat, and numerous friends, family, neighbors, and lovers seem to have a motive for the fatal stabbing. As the number of suspects grows, the lies begin to unravel in what promises to be a hit summer read. This one’s for fans of Shari Lapena and Mary Kubica.” (8-31) KC Davis
Three authors made the August Hall of Fame, including Silvia Moreno Garcia with Velvet Was the Night. “It’s the 1970s in Mexico City where Maite is a secretary who lives for one thing: the latest issue of ‘Secret Romance’. While student protests and political unrest consume the city, Maite escapes into stories of passion and danger. Her next-door neighbor, Leonora, a beautiful art student, seems to live a life of intrigue and romance that Maite envies. When Leonora disappears under suspicious circumstances, Maite finds herself searching for the missing woman—and journeying deeper into Leonora’s secret life of student radicals and dissidents.” (8-31)
Popular author, Helen Hoang’s newest is The Heart Principle. “When violinist Anna Sun accidentally achieves career success with a viral YouTube video, she finds herself incapacitated and burned out from her attempts to replicate that moment. And when her long-time boyfriend announces he wants an open relationship before making a final commitment, a hurt and angry Anna decides that if he wants open, then she does, too. Translation: She’s going to embark on a string of dating unacceptable men. That’s where tattooed, motorcycle-riding Quan Diep comes in.” (8-31)
Bombshell is by Sarah Maclean. “After years of living as London’s brightest scandal, Lady Sesily Talbot has embraced the reputation and the freedom that comes with the title. No one looks twice when she lures a gentleman into the dark gardens beyond a Mayfair ballroom. . .and no one realizes those trysts are not what they seem.” (8-31)
Happy reading and we’ll look for you in the library!
