Groundbreaking Ceremony For Pilgrims Community Center on March 17

The City of Mount Pleasant will host a Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Pilgrims Community Center in Oaklawn Park on Thursday, March 17 at 4 p.m.

“We invite citizens to come celebrate the start of construction of this new community amenity with us,” said Mayor Tracy Craig Sr. “This is a great investment in our City and its people that will accommodate multiple activities at the same time in the beautiful park setting. Great care has been taken in the design to enhance the park, not change it.”

The City facility was spurred by Pilgrims’ donation of $1.45 million through its Hometown Strong program, created to give back to the communities in which the company operates and its employees live.”

“This goal made Oaklawn Park an ideal location for the new Community Center, as this neighborhood has supported Pilgrims throughout the years,” said Mayor Craig. “Many generations of employees have lived in this neighborhood, and raised their families here, leaving a rich and lasting legacy.”

To ensure plentiful space, the Council approved the investment of an additional $1.35 million by the City, for a total of $2.8 million.

The facility was designed by Godwin Design of Hughes Springs, TX, and Watson Commercial Construction of Tyler, TX, was selected in July 2021 through the City’s bidding process. All parties have worked carefully to preserve the park’s beautiful, treed setting.

The construction timeline from start to completion will be 18 months, weather dependent, putting the opening date in the Summer of 2023. Oaklawn Park is located at 1103 Searcy Avenue.
